Labret / Lip / Mouche / Cheek
Time of healing: 3 - 6 weeks.
The
origin of this piercing is from some natives in Africa and South America. Some
tribes do gradually enlarge the hole so that a big disk can be inserted into the
lip. The most common location is right in the middle and at a suitable distance
from the red part of the lip.
You may choose a special labret jewel, although some do prefer a ring. Initially, the length of the jewel must be somewhat greater than the thickness of the lip to allow for some swelling and also to avoid that the back plate slowly gnaws its way into the lip during this period of swelling. If this is the case, you will experience pain and a longer period of healing. Subsequently, and right after that the swelling has disappeared, the jewel can be replaced by one having a more proper length, although we do recommend postponing this procedure until complete healing has taken place.
Provided that this piercing has been performed by a professional, and that you have taken sufficiently care of it, it's expected to heal quite easily. You may choose another location than a middle position. Some do prefer a ring through the left or the right side of the lip, others a jewel through the lateral aspect of the lips like a mouche (birthmark).
